What is Betting vs Gambling and why is it important?

The action of gambling money on the outcome of a race, game, or other unpredictable event.”football pools and other forms of betting

Oxford Language

Above is the definition of betting from the Oxford Languages website. This is very similar to the definition of gambling, where a gambler places a stake (usually money) on a outcome of an event for some pre-defined payout. The subtle difference is that gambling for the most part is a game of luck and betting can involve skill to influence how often the bettor wins. Of course luck or variance is still massively important in determining a bettors success.

The above definition is also shows another key difference between gambling and betting. Whilst the act of staking and receiving a payout are the same, the measure of long term unpredictability for betting events are much more difficult to measure versus gambling events e.g predicting the outcome of a football match will see odds and lines change where as the price for red in roulette is fixed. This is where the difference starts to matter as a gambler in this sense is almost always guaranteed to lose to the house where as a bettor can employ tactics and strategies to gain an advantage.

If the place of “bets” is without thought then once might actually consider yourself a gambler as returns are essentially based on luck, with the exception of the reduced likelihood that a bookmaker offers its prices at of course. To become a better bettor, it requires an understanding of the mechanics of this world. These are essentially once again included in the definition:

  • Gambling money – Here the amount that one places is important
  • Picking the outcome of the race, game or other unpredictable event – Identifying value bets is imperative to long term returns

It is the aim of this site that we share some of the fundamental knowledge of bookmaking to the reader to allow them to make inform choice and make their bets better!
